Basel, December 15th 2000Light for Bruno ManserFor over half a year now the committed environmental and human rights activist Bruno Manser has been missing. On Monday, December 11, the sixth class in Grub/SG, together with the society "Kein Stolz auf Tropenholz" (no pride in tropical wood) from eastern Switzerland have started the demonstrative action "Light for the protection of Bruno Manser". This light will be brought on Wednesday, December 20 to Basel and Geneva as well as to the Nufenen-Rheinwald - where Bruno worked for a long time as shepherd. Here the light will be passed on to friends as a sign of solidarity with Bruno's family and with the Penan, who are stuggling for survival in Sarawak/ Malaysia, and above all as a sign of hope for a return of this unique human being, whose disappearance is an irreplaceable loss to his relatives and friends. The candlelight can and should be passed on personally - especially during Advent our thoughts will be with this generous and committed person who has for years tirelessly devoted his entire energy to the Penan's cause and has fought with total worldwide engagement against the clearcutting of the last virgin rainforests and the extermination of the peoples of the rainforest. Unfortunately, the tropical forests are still being cut down at an unbroken pace - not only in in Sarawak/Malaysia. One of the few recorded successes of Bruno Manser are the 282 Swiss communities who have decided to desist from using wood from virgin forests in public construction. Each of these communities and towns have received a candle from the society "Kein Stolz auf Tropenholz" and the Bruno-Manser-Fund with the request also to light it and pass it on. The events in Nufenen-Rheinwald, in Basel and Geneva will be launched with short speeches by relatives, friends and young people. Light will be paseed on to all present.
All those who feel close to Bruno Manser and his concerns and commitments are kindly invited to send Bruno a message of light! Heartfelt season's greetings to all of you from the Bruno Manser Fund! ![]() Photo: Bruno Manser |
