Documentation "Totem for Bruno Manser"

Text for Bruno

Letters between Bruno Manser and Anthony and Gita Brooke, whose ancestors were ruling Sarawak under the British empire

From: Bruno Manser, Bruno-Manser-Fonds, Basle, Switzerland 11th February 1998

fax to: Operation Peace through Unity

Dear Anthony

Thanks for all the good wished and good thoughts you and Gita have sent.

In Sarawak the Penan still battle for the last remaining virgin forest - their homeland.

I have decided to jumbp into Kuching with a parachute (the Malaysian/Sarawak'Flags) at Hari Raya Haji, to hand myself to the authorities and draw attention to the Penans plea - and as a surprise. If you have any recommendation helping for success - please let us know, how to touch Taibs heart.

Peace upon you BRUNO

Operation Peace through Unity Accredited NGO in association with the UN Dept. of Public Information Co-founders Anthony Brooke and Gita Brooke

11. February 1998

Although, dear Bruno, the dramatic course you are contemplating would surely attract momentary media attention of your personal life or unremitting commitment to the plight of the Penan, it would not, we think, influence government policy except perhaps in a manner counterproductive to the cause you so onepointedly and dedicatedly pursue.

It is our understanding that the heart of one person can only be touched from within the heart of another, lightly, lovingly and without forcefulness. Having spoken "truth to power" so to speak, one must have faith in the outcome, knowing that one has played a small but significant part in the whole process of the overriding imperative of humanity today: that of building a new civilisation. This is a process in which each and every part of our human family will - in some way - have to participate. Whether we like it or not, a global neighbourhood is emerging in which we must learn to live together in harmony and peace.

To work on "special missions" within this concept of wholeness is, at times, almost intolerable. However, in our view there is no other way of assuring that the common good is at the very heart of all our actions. This is not necessarily as stifling as it sounds, but demands right timing for all we do.

We know your heart will give you the answers to correct action, dearest Bruno. Our only, most sincere, advice is that you, in stillness and without any anxiety, listen to your heart, - and obey.

Our love and prayers - as always - enfold you

Anthony & Gita

Dear Anthony, dear Gita

Thanks for your quick reply. I will listen to my heart. To get positive results it would be well to do the action with an official permit, to land on the Hari Raya Haji, apologising by giving a white lamb to the Chief Minister and his wife in confidence. But how to get the permit?!

Looking forwards, yours BRUNO
